Have You Ever Ridden a Surf Mat? Because You’re Missing Out.

Most people walk past the surf mat on the wall and don’t give it a second look. It doesn’t look like a surfboard, nor a boogie board - But the people who know, know. And once you’ve ridden one, you'll be hooked, and these things are perfect for any day at the beach.

So What Exactly Is a Surf Mat?

A surf mat is an inflatable, body-length mat made from heavy-duty TPU-coated nylon that you ride prone - lying face-down - directly on the wave. No standing up, no strapping in. Just you, the mat, and the water moving a few inches below your face. It sounds simple because it is. But simple doesn’t mean slow — surf mats are actually one of the fastest wave-riding craft in the water, producing less drag than nearly any other surfcraft on the market.

“You’re hauling ass. It’s pretty unreal.”

What Makes the Turbomat Special 🚀

The Turbomat is purpose-built for surf mat riding - this isn’t a pool toy or a boogie board knockoff. A few things that set it apart:

  • Compact, maneuverable design built for tighter control, quick turns, and speed down the line
  • Double-barrel concave bottom delivers extra drive and pocket control - whether you’re trimming through clean walls or pulling under the lip
  • Suited for all levels from kids learning the craft to experienced mat riders who know exactly what they want
  • Adjustable inflation that actually changes how the mat rides - more air = faster, less air = more control
  • $99 and in stock now at the shop and online

How Do You Ride One?

You’ll want fins - they’re essential for paddling and steering. Paddle out like you would on a bodyboard, grab the front corners lightly (a loose grip lets the mat flex with the wave), and position your chest about halfway down the mat. From there it’s all feel: shift your weight with your chest and hips to steer, and let the mat do the rest. The learning curve is short, and the reward is immediate. First-timers usually come in grinning.

Who Is It For?

Honestly, anyone with fins and a sense of adventure. The Turbomat is approachable enough for kids and beginners who want something easy to catch waves on, but it’s also a genuine weapon for experienced wave riders chasing speed and a completely different sensation in the water. It’s also incredibly packable - deflate it, roll it up, throw it in a bag. It’s the easiest piece of surf gear to travel with.

One Quick Thing About the Handle

The Turbomat has a handle, and people naturally assume it’s for dragging the mat underwater when duck diving. It’s not - and pulling it that way can stress the seams. The handle is designed to hold the mat steady as you push through oncoming waves. Small thing, but worth knowing before your first session.
