The Mormyrid is Rob Lan's round nose triplane fish. A low entry rocker with a little flip in the tail makes it an easy paddler and a real wave magnet, and it turns tighter than a traditional fish while keeping all the benefits of a short, wide board. The drive is surprising for a twin, and if you slide your back foot up a bit, the tail loosens up and releases. Rob builds it as the perfect step over to a fish for shortboarders, or the perfect step into a more performance board for fish, mid and longboard riders.

WHY WE PICKED THIS BOARD

We picked the Mormyrid because it bridges two worlds. Shortboarders get a fish that still turns, and fish and mid riders get a board that's a step toward performance without losing the paddle and the glide. It's a great everyday board for the waves we get around here.

ABOUT THE SHAPER

Rob Lan grew up skating in Brooklyn, New York, and built his first surfboard from a kit before he really knew how to surf. Eight years ago he moved to the North Shore of Oʻahu, where he shapes and glasses his own boards and works at Murray Glassing in the historic Old Waialua Sugar Mill, doing sanding and color work for some of surfing's most respected shapers. His designs are inspired by the wide variety of waves around the island. In 2025 he was a finalist in Vissla's Just Add Color competition and took 2nd Place Best in Show at the Boardroom Show.
